Welcome to Ostara — the Spring Equinox — and one of my favourite moments on the Wheel of the Year! Spring has long been recognized as a sacred turning point by peoples across the world — from the Shinto Haru Matsuri celebrations of Japan, where the awakening kami of the land are honoured with gratitude and renewal, to the Celtic traditions I hold so dear, whose roots stretched from Northwestern Europe all the way down into the Mediterranean, weaving together one of the most beautifully layered and far-reaching spiritual tapestries we know. This is the sacred point of balance, where day and night stand equal before the light tips the scales and the world wakes up. The goddess Brigid’s flame — first kindled at Imbolc — burns brighter now, and Cernunnos (Green Man), the ancient masculine spirit of the wild and greening earth, stirs across the thawing land. And Ostara — known also as Eostre, the Celtic-Germanic goddess of dawn and new beginnings — calls us to shed what we carried through the dark and step into the fertile ground of what’s possible. May this season bring you the courage of new seeds planted, the warmth of returning light, and the joy of all that is ready to grow in you. I’ve been working with the Ostara Tarot for my seasonal pick-a-pile readings for a few years now, and every spring I’m struck by how perfectly this deck captures that liminal, hopeful magic. Take a breath, feel the shift in the air, and let’s see what the cards have to say about your spring.
As we celebrate this turning of the season, I want to pause and offer sacred acknowledgment of the peoples on whose land we gather and call home — speaking here now specifically to Southern Alberta. In honour of the Blackfoot Nation, the Tsuut’ina Nation, the Stoney Nakoda, the Métis, and all peoples who are the sacred stewards of this land we live on. In Blackfoot tradition, spring — Motoyi — marks the beginning of a new year, a time of ceremony, of opening sacred medicine bundles at the first sound of thunder, and of renewing the commitments between the people and the land. To the ancestors of this territory, the return of the light has always been sacred. I hold that knowing with gratitude today.
Now for our pick-a-pile! As always, the process is simple and intuitive — let your eye, your gut, or your heart draw you toward one of the piles below, and the card on top of that pile holds a message for you. We read right-side up only.
You’re welcome to approach this however feels right for you. You can hold a general question — what is the most important thing for me to know right now? — or ask something specific that’s sitting on your heart. If you’d like to follow my lead today, here is the intention I’m holding for this reading: as we step into this season of growth, from Spring Equinox now through to the Harvest of Fall, I’m inviting you to hold in your mind, your heart, and your spirit whatever it is you feel called to grow, build, or manifest in this window of time. It might be something in your career, your relationships, your inner knowing, your self-love, your abundance — one thing or many. And if you don’t yet know what that is? That’s perfect too. Let the card offer you some direction. Simply arrive with an open heart, and ask: what guidance does my higher self, my guides, or the wisdom within me have for my growth between now and Harvest?
Trust your instinct. Pick your pile. Let’s see what’s waiting for you.
